POLY IBADAN UPDATE: Unions meet Ajumobi over indefinite strike, set up fresh committees for negotiations

On Thursday 2nd November 2017, The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Trade Unions embarked on an indefinite strike action owning to fractional payment by Oyo State Government and 25{33d6a686862d66e41780c5e030709bcac392ee9ccd0ba51b9624617336965b1c} payment of institution’s subvention which has led to the death of 10 members of the union. The strike is presently on at the six tertiary institutions controlled by the state government.

 

The action of the union triggered a meeting with the state government on Tuesday 7th November, 2017 at the state secretariat. The Oyo State Governor, His Excellency, Senator Isiaq Abiola Ajimobi who was unavoidably absent was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Lekan Alli and other executive members present were The Head of Service, Mr. Soji Eniade and The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Olowofela received the members of the union Led by Comrade Waheed Olojede, NLC Chairman, Oyo State.

 

The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Olowofela gave a detailed report to the house and stated that government cannot afford to give full subvention to institutions because the government cannot afford to take care of all their needs as the needs are numerous.

 

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Lekan Alli pleaded  and requested the union to suspend the strike while a sub-committee be set up to meet with the government  who will set up a governing council for further discussion on how both parties will come to an agreement on the way forward. Speaking further on the importance of the committee, he said the size of the union is too large to achieve a headway and further appealed  that the strike be suspended while discussions continues.

 

The Union refused and requested that all her demands must be met since there had been an earlier discussion and the government has decided to breach the contract. The Chairman of The Joint Committee of Trade Unions, Comrade Afeez Adeniyi who spoke on behalf of the Union said, all members’ arrears must be paid and full payment of salaries must commence before any discussion can continue. “This is not the first time we come into an agreements with the government but we at all times  fulfill our own part of the contract but it is very unfortunate that the government  breached  these contracts”, he said.

The Union later set up a seven men committee at the NLC secretariat which five of its members were drawn from the six institutions in the state and two from NLC and TUC.
