Cable News Network, Inc.(CNN) has refused to the Witness Summons by the Lagos Judicial Panel of Inquiry and Restitution of Victims of SARS Related Abuses asking CNN reporters and team members to appear before it on Saturday, December 12, to give evidence on their reportage of the #EndSARS Lekki shooting.
It will be recalled that the CNN in her documentaries on the #ENDSARS protest and the #Lekkishoting said that the Nigerian Army aimed and shot at protesters which he Nigerian government had since debunked saying they are all lies.
The CNN Lekki shooting documentary has hit the Nigerian Government so hard that it had earlier condemned it and it is on this documentary that the panel of enquiry summoned the international news agency reporters
The international news agency said the Panel lacks jurisdiction to summon its staff before it as they are not in Nigeria.
Messrs. Olumide Babalola LP, the CNN’s lawyer filed the objection dated 4th December 2020 at the Tribunal on December 9, 2020.
In the letter, “Since the Objectors are not “persons in Nigeria” as envisaged by the provision of section 5(c) (of Tribunals Of Inquiry Law Of Lagos State, Cap. T6), then this Honourable Tribunal is, with respect, bereft of territorial jurisdiction to compel their attendance to give evidence before it”, Babalola wrote.
Babalola said that the panel invited him into its Private Hearing Room on Saturday morning and subsequently excused CNN from further proceedings or appearing before the Panel.
