Indonesia‘s Aceh flogged six people publicly for violating Islamic law and order even at the space of COVID-19. The country whose social distancing law is in place and it is targeted at curbing the spread of Coronavirus in the country. Aceh is on the Western tip of Sumatra and is the only region in the country with Muslim-majority to impose Islamic law.
Many of the erring members of the community who got the strokes were not wearing face masks and some were not keeping the social distancing order.
Law enforcement personnel in Indonesia insisted that the social distancing law as directed by the World Health Organization (W.H.O) will not prevent the violators from being punished and the flogging process too already violates the social distancing rule.

The official responsible for Sharia punishments in the provincial capital Banda Aceh Safriadi said, “to comply with current conditions, we are trying to cut unnecessary procedures like the usual opening speech.
“We just carried out the flogging directly to make it simpler. The whipping will still go on, but we’re limiting the number of people involved,” added Safriadi.
Among those flogged were four men who got 40 strokes each for drinking alcohol. Alcohol drinking is against the Islamic rule that governs Indonesia. Another set of persons who got into the whipping pool is an unmarried man and a woman caught in a hotel. They both got 24 lashes each for their offenses.
The province allows whipping for a range of charges including gambling, having gay or pre-marital sex, adultery, and drinking alcohol.
In the spirit of the forthcoming holy month of Ramadan, the region has released another man who got whippings and jail term for drinking alcohol to join his family for the fasting period.
