WAEC: Nigeria is not in-charge of exam date

West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) is not owned and controlled by Nigeria and that has made the nation to be a handicap on the resumption of students writing these exams.

The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 had earlier said that the schools shall be opened to students in terminal classes and those who are at the verge of writing their terminal examination.

Sani Aliyu has made known during a TV show that the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) timetable is not determined by Nigeria and this singular factor negates Nigeria‘s new normal plan.

Noting that the time-table for the examination is determined by the body coordinating the examination and not just a country. Saying Nigeria can not say when the examination will commence.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Aliyu in an interview on Wednesday, July 1, noted that the Federal Government will not want a serious spill-over in the nation’s academic calendar because that will affect graduating students.

He further shows concern on getting the students back to school and safe for their duties, exams and other responsibilities.

“We need to find a way to safely get these students to do their exams and exit, otherwise we will have a serious spill-over when it comes to education”, he said

He also pointed out that there is a need to find a way to safely get these students to do their exams and exit, to avoid such spill-overs.

“We have a large number of students that are in their exit year. They need to move on. We have exams that are not specific only to Nigeria but in West Africa, WAEC for instance”, he said.

Aliu said, “COVID will go away eventually. It may take a year or longer, but what we don’t want is to have such a significant impact on our educational programme where children are unable to move at home where there is no mobility.”
